Spiritual Wellbeing

Spiritual wellbeing is an important aspect of whole health and wellbeing.  As individuals we have a body, soul and spirit and sometimes we are better at taking care of our body (our physical health) and our soul (which includes our mental health) and sometimes we ignore the health of our spirit.  Spiritual wellbeing specifically refers to the need every individual has to be connected to something greater than oneself.  This connection gives our lives meaning and purpose.

Some aspects of your spiritual wellbeing include:

  • the ability to discover inner peace and beauty and our values in life.
  • the ability to actively participate in relationships, community and creativity.
  • the ability to connect and contribute to life – our own life, the lives of others and our environment.

Spiritual wellbeing is what gives our lives meaning and purpose and helps us form connections with the world around us.  From a Christian perspective, the foundation of spiritual wellbeing is being connected with God, in an eternal relationship, through a believing faith in Jesus Christ.  Knowing who we are in light of who God is gives our lives value, meaning and purpose.

Here’s a checklist that you can think through to determine how your spiritual wellbeing is going.

  1. Do you feel your life has purpose?
  2. How content are you with your life?
  3. How balanced does your life feel?
  4. Can you articulate your values and beliefs?
  5. Do you make time for self-reflection?
  6. Are you building and growing positive relationships?
  7. Are you experiencing peace, even if you are facing challenging situations?
  8. Do you have the freedom to choose joy?
  9. Do you feel connected to the world around you?
  10. Do you have hope for the future?

You may also feel a greater sense of happiness in life and be better able to cope with the challenges that come across your path.  Being able to draw on an inner peace helps you stay strong when life doesn’t go the way you thought it would.  There are always going to be good days, not so good days and let’s be honest, some days are terrible.  In the midst of this, your connection with yourself, others and particulary God can give you the strength to keep walking, keep moving forward and come out the other side having grown through the difficult experiences of life.

Daily Practises To Boost Your Spiritual Wellbeing

There are some simple things we can all do to take care of our spritiual wellbeing.  

Connect with yourself – Try journalling to capture your thoughts and feelings and process them, record those things that bring you joy and inspire you, notice the things that are causing you stress or fear, reflect on what you have to be grateful for.

Connect in your community – Whether this is your workplace, your church, your social group, volunteer organisations or community groups, staying connected to others is a great way to build friendships and have a place of belonging.

Connect beyond yourself – Spend time daily connecting with those things that are bigger than just us.  Go outside and enjoy the sky, the clouds, the birds, spend time in prayer, or meditating on words from the Bible, consider what you think about God and why.
